This is NOT the sound of New Zealand Music Month…

This is NOT the Christchurch sound - Vol. 1

This is NOT the Christchurch sound - Vol. 1

Well it kind of is. I just thought I’d be a little controversial with my post heading. It’s NZ Music Month here in NZ so I thought I’d play some NZ music on Starlifter Radio. Actually that’s not true either, the kiwi tunes I’m playing on my little internet radio station are getting played because they’re fucking great and I’m really diggin’ them at the mo.

To start off with I’ve got the original “This is NOT the Christchurch sound” CD. It features songs on the Indie Rock to Electro spectrum from bands and artists such as Ed Muzik, Tom Cosm, Break Mission Kills, Charlie ASH, Pig Out, Get Set Play, The L.E.D.s, Tiger Tones, 5 1/2 Minutes, Electro Pussy Posse and more. We released it with RDU 98.5 FM in June 2007 to get some attention for all the local acts we thought deserved a little more attention.

Then we have my latest DJ mix ‘Interstella Week Beats Your Intergalactic Year”, a set containing electronic beats and grooves from LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, DIM, Uberzone, The Future Sound of London, Vinyl Life & Joey Beltram, Rocha + Lewinger, Underworld and Telefon Te Aviv.

And further on the Christchurch tip we’ve got tracks from Bang! Bang! Eche!, Hypercolour, No Aloha; Auckland cats Bandicoot; and Ex-Dunners now AK kats (I think) Brains.

There is also the latest from School of Seven Bells, these guys are amazing!

So that’s the go, there’s heaps more on there as well so be sure to tune into www.StarlifterRadio.com and get down with your bad elf.

Loud Rock, Rickity Thieves, and Rock-Pop-Tones!

The latest to be added to Starlifter Radio is a raucous rock mix of new and not-so-new.

Just added:
Shout Out Louds – four by four
Thieves – comfort creature – Auckland, NZ – http://thievesss.bandcamp.com
Tiger Tones – i love you but i hate you (but i’m just not sure) – Christchurch, NZ – http://www.myspace.com/thetigertones
LCD Soundsystem – drunk girls
White Denim – shake shake shake
Dum Dum Girls – jail la la – http://www.subpop.com/cybersex
Golden Triangle – neon noose – http://www.subpop.com/cybersex

‘Four by Four’ is my favourite from the new album, ‘Work’, from Swedish Pop-rock group, ‘Shout Out Louds’. ‘Thieves’ from Dunedin is a band I’ve just stumbled upon, they’ve got a late 90s / early 2000s indie rock sound to them and definitely worth checking out. Christchurch outfit ‘Tiger Tones’ have just moved to Auckland and this is a classic dance floor number from them. The latest from the ‘LCD Soundsystem’ has just hit the blogo’ and ‘Drunk Girls’ is the first single, check it! I LOVE the buzz of ‘White Denim’ from Austin, Texas, ‘Shake Shake Shake’ is one of those tunes that gets my toe tapping and makes me what to dance, glorious! And finally there’s two from the latest Sub Pop Cybersex sampler, a free legal download and North-West indie pop-rock at it’s best.

There’s the goss! Check it out, tune into StarlifterRadio.com and Hit Play Zucker!!!

Peace,

Supa yall!

The flyer does all the taLK. TTTTT

Tiger Tones – one of the most signifigant bands in CHCH since Shocking Pinks is doing the pilgrimage to AK/NZ. Who can blame them, AK is a rad city. Pikachunes is also making the move too. Sadness all round :(
So anyways, this Friday at Double Happy is your second to last chance to see them jam before their mighty trek. I’ll also be spinning some tunes at the start of the night. Come on down and hang yo. It’s $10 on the door and tunes start at 10pm. To get you in the mood here is their latest single ’short thing’

Tiger Tones – short thing

Tiger Tones @ San Fran Bathhouse, Wellington

Tiger Tones @ San Fran Bathhouse, Wellington

Review by Darlene Brown

I was sent the new Tiger Tones track “Short Thing” to review; and although it has been a while since I’ve seen these guys play I’m not surprised at where the sound of this innovative and talented group has progressedShort Thing is a step sideways with less punk and more dance, with that undeniable Tiger Tones bassline keeping things steady. Picture this: a man driving down an American boulevard, top down with big black square wrap-around sunglasses talking on a brick cellphone. That’s just the drumfill. The rest of the track gives a nod to early Pig Out and LCD Soundsystem. The vocals remind me of Arthur Russell.

If this is a taste of a 2010 album, I’m excited!

Cut Off Your Hands @ Al’s Bar 30/10/2008 [Review by Thom]

Since their last show in Christchurch, Cut Off Your Hands (COYH) have become world famous. Well, nearly. Touring with Foals and Friendly fires is definitely a step toward householdnamism, and signing to over 15 record deals worldwide is just about enough to keep bic biros in business. However, despite touring endlessly around the globe (7 UK tours last year), the group still have their roots.

Last night’s show at Al’s bar was the first from COYH since their nationwide tour with So So Modern. Back then, the group had one EP under their collective belts, and played alongside a then fresh faced and unknown Bang! Bang! Eche! With the release of their debut full length, and a few thousand miles later, COYH were back, and more contemplative than before.

Gig openers ‘The Klap’ were quick to impress with buttoned down shirts, foot-stomp glamour, and an alarmingly large number of people singing to every word. Seeing as the band have almost built their entire look around looking surprised, last night seemed a fitting induction to their new life as the RDU golden children.

After minimal delay, COYH graced the stage opening with an energetic, yet muddy ‘Happy as can be’. A single obviously lost on old fans, yet, like oxygen to the new breed of punters. The song did introduce the band’s new ‘open stage’ policy, a concept usually more at home in real-estate. The crowd claimed the stage with prompting from frontman Nick, opening the stage to a plethora of John Travolta-esque public/self-conscious dancing. The band followed with Turn cold, their latest single and throwback to their early days, before drifting into semi-self indulgent ballad country. While making some ground in justifying the inclusion of these ‘slow’ songs on record, they did little to add to the set. During this dimmer escapade, the crowd left the stage leaving a lone Mark (Tiger Tones frontman) to hold the fort, tackling the singer Nick and knocking out leads. The group did finish strongly, however, with stirring renditions of You and I, Oh Girl and Eyes Closed.

While the gig lacked intensity at times, it is obvious that the group have toured extensively, and are a real unit on stage. While my mum in Auckland still struggles to come to terms with their graphic name, I get the feeling that the name ‘Cut Off Your Hands’ will be on the lips of more than just knife wielding cretins, quicker than you can say “come on stage so people can watch you dance.”
