Bang! Bang! Eche! – SONIC DEATH CUNTTTT EP

SonicDeathCuntttt

So do we need a background on this Christchurch, NZ and worldwide famous band?

They started around 2007 if memory serves – they’re young, and have done a hell of a lot in a really really REALLY short amount of time. If you’ve heard their music, you’ll understand why.

So the question has always been what does Bang! Bang! Eche! mean, and how did they start. I wasn’t even gonna go there in this review, except I found this comment on a random American blogsite so I had to share:

“We get the Bang! Bang! part, but what does Eche at the end of it mean? BBE’s guitarist/synth player, Charlie explains. “ECHE is native Maori for “awesome partytimes”!!!

LMAO

They released a self titled EP last year, and have released a follow up titled SONIC DEATH CUNTTTT.

SONIC DEATH CUNTTTT is brash, in your face, dance punk. It’s in the realm of Test Icicles, Rapture, Liars and Gang of Four – mixing punk and rave on another level. Everything works: the bass, the electronics, the guitar, the vocals, the speed, the screaming, the distortion. Only young people can do this well. I don’t wanna hear this stuff made by 35 year olds.

The four tracks, totalling 12 minutes of happiness, tell me to forget about my problems and come party. My favourite track on the EP is Dirt In The Water for it’s blinding guitar riffs and pace. And if you go see them live, you’re going to be happy. Everyone can play every instrument, and you can tell they enjoy it. Another bonus is that Zach vocalises in a NZ accent. YUSSSS.

I’ve always thought this group were great and they’ve surpassed that annoying generic word. They’re tight, exuberant, and the recordings are top notch. I need a new word in another language to describe this band, so because I’m in Japan I’ll do as the Japanese do. Bang! Bang! Eche = SUUUUUUGGGGOOOOIIIIII!!!!!

Finally! A new tune from ritalined vibesters Bang Bang Eche, and it trumps all their previous work in the first 30 seconds. From its cinematic intro to its glitched finale, Fist Full of Dollars packs punches. It seems the band have found their feet, figured out what they do best and done it in spades. The dominant synth line is frenetic and groovy as all hell, the guitars are edgy, glitched and reworked, the vocals are witty and delivered with savage conviction and the drums are have more groove than ever before. Overtop of all of this the tune is mixed and produced beautifully. Download it here, and hang on for the ride.

Bang! Bang! Eche! and Batman Tiddabades @ Mighty Mighty, Wellington (14-03-09)

Bang! Bang! Eche! @ KEXP in NYC

Finding myself as a new appendage in a newer city, it struck me like a tour bus yesterday that it was high time I absorbed a little Wellington culture. So I did, by heading blinkingly off into the night to see one of my favourite bands… from Christchurch. It had been a while since I’d seen the young scenesters, Bang Bang Eche, in person. Despite splitting a plane with them to Auckland in January, November was the last, where, sharing a stage with Wellington band New Friend, BBE embarked on a whisky fuelled debaucherous, yet comical, set, punctuated by missed timings and mid-song fistfights (Charlie and Zach spent Nike throwing shoes at each other). However, if BBE were a cow, last night’s set with Batman Tiddabades was the cream.

Sidestepping pre-teens with eyes glazed from indulgence at the Homegrown festival, I made my way to Mighty Mighty, and was lucky to get in. The smallish venue was packed to its offbeat and creaking rafters with opshop hipsters, all jiving to the brutish beats of Batman Tiddabades. Despite only forming this year, the boys have built quite an empire. Once they’ve ironed out a few geling issues and manage to drive their grooves from the pocket, they’re truly a force to party with.

BBE appeared around an hour later in a roar of synths and hi hats, and within seconds had toes twitching, heads nodding, pours dripping and floorboards creaking the room over. The kids have definitely permeated the Wellington market with on mass rap alongs and yelps of joy from kids who recognised the opening bars from each of their myspace classics. Four To the Floor evoked waves of fist pumps, and a choral sing along that could have been heard from Masterton. They did, however, grind out as many new tunes as old and their sound showed a new maturity and development. Their new songs are both dancier and punkier, and will sound incredible on record. Here’s hoping that SXSW is going to be the starting gun for future success, and the next time I see them is in an arena somewhere.
